But Who’s Next For Manny?

Posted on 28 November 2011

The one name that most boxing fans want to place beside vs Manny Pacquiao is Floyd Mayweather Jr. It seems most folks either want to really see once and for all who’s the best boxer in the planet. Other folks would just like to see Mayweather get his ass handed to him, while others still would love to see 1 L to his 42 Ws. I am not one of them. Sure I’d like to see who the big cheese really is. I’d also love to see Mayweather getting his just desserts. However I wouldn’t want to see that fight because it’s 100% guaranteed that it’s going to be boring. And not just boring, boring. It’s got monumental boring written all over it.

We see some action in the Pacquiao vs Marquez fight because for 1, there’s bad blood between the two, especially in Marquez’ side of the court. Also, while a counterpuncher, Marquez does like to initiate action from time to time.

Floyd however will hide behind his shoulder all night. Wait for Manny Pacquiao to come in, back off, either launch a quick left hook or a lead right but only when Manny has already fully committed. If he manages to stagger him he’ll swarm for two or three punches, wait it out and see if the swarming was effective and then get into the fray again.

Unfortunately, Floyd doesn’t have the big guns to stagger Manny. His lead right won’t be something that Manny’s hasn’t met before so what’s gonna happen is, Manny will try to engage, Floyd hides behind his shoulder, take pot shots, back away. Rinse, repeat. Like I said, one heck of a boring fight.

Other boxing fanatics can preach the sweet science to other folks, but to me that’s water off a duck’s back. I’d rather see two warriors intent on decapitating each other than oohh and aahh to a scintillating display of sweet science. Please save it for somebody who gives a flying donut.

The match that Arum wants to do again is Marquez vs Pacquiao 4. Can’t blame the old man because at the moment there’s the atmosphere of resentment, revenge, conspiracy, and other unanswered questions that people would want to get definite answers. Of course Manny and Roach and all other folks in Team Pacquiao doesn’t see that or doesn’t want to see that because Marquez is like Sam Lloyd’s unsolvable 15-puzzle. He’s like Rafael Nadal to Manny Pacquiao’s Roger Federer.

For me there are two names that bring back the luster to Manny Pacquiao’s tainted persona of invincibility. Both names are going to pose huge risks to Manny Pacquiao but with the risks come great rewards. It’s really going to generate a pile of cash for Manny Pacquiao that I think he can afford to consult Top Gear for what car he should purchase next instead of just throwing cash on a piece of metal just because it’s named Ferrari. Not that it’s a bad purchase, I just think he could have done a little research first before buying a really expensive piece of sheet metal.

But I digress. The names I have in mind are:

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

Sergio ‘Miravella’ Martinez

Both men are bigger but I think they’ll have no problem dropping down to 150 for a multi-million dollar purse. Like I said huge risks for Manny Pacquiao. But if you’re a superstar looking for a spectacular win after a ho-hum performance, who would you rather fight? Timothy Bradley? Please.

Saul Alvarez has just dispatched of Kermit Cintron in 5 while Sergio Martinez also came off a not so spectacular win over Darren Barker.

If memory serves me right there was supposed to be an offer extended to Manny Pacquiao by Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican Telecom magnate to fight Canelo in Mexico. Although that one did not materialize, still it’s something that can seriously be considered especially if Slim backs the fight.

Miravella has been considered by some bandwagoners, oops, as the greatest thing since sliced bread and has installed him as the best fighter on the planet. It’s bullshit of course, but he did dispatch of Paul Williams in brutal fashion and disposed of Serhiy Dzinziruk like he’s sweeping aside some fringe contender.

Both means should provide Manny with the challenge that he and the fans deserve.
